What is JDM and are there problems having it serviced?

The domestic market is full of products from various countries. Even most things that are manufactured in the United States get parts from foreign countries and vice versa. The term American made is becoming a less and less frequently used term. JDM is the acronym for the Japanese Domestic Market. This term refers to the economic market that is present for Japanese-brand goods. Theses goods include several things such as automobile parts, computer parts etc.

Anything that is a JDM such as automobile parts are built and designed according to the likes and dislikes of the Japanese market. However it is possible for these same cars to end up in the United Sates and other countries. JDM vehicles generally limit the amount of horsepower that they use in their cars and their cars don’t go over 180 mph regardless of the horsepower. Even those cars that are made to achieve high speeds are unable to because all Japanese imported cars possess a built-in limiting device. JDM vehicles also often are equipped with different equipment and features than vehicles sold other places. They are built differently to take into effect the varying emission regulations in different countries as well as the feel of the ride.

What it boils down to is vehicles that are built to satisfy JDM qualifications may have tougher suspensions and an improved throttle over those that are built for other markets such as the United States. Also a big thing is that some features are removed in the US/European market versions in order to stay within a certain price range. It definitely makes since to not add certain features in order to keep the costs down. JDM sports cars also have decreased engine power in order to meet the more stringent emission standards present in other countries. Just to give you an example of the differences, the Honda has several different versions of their engines due to the differences in emission regulations in the various countries they are sold. In the automotive world JDM is the act of modifying mainly cars of Japanese origin. The main goal is generally to enhance the looks whether than being concerned about the function. For example some JDM engines are imported into the US and put into Honda, Nissan and other sport or street cars in order to give them a higher performance output.

You can run into problems when trying to get Japanese Imports serviced for several reasons. The first one being that you must make sure that you are going to a person that is trained to deal with these imports. They will need to know exactly what model you have in order to determine the exact parts that should be used. Like the example that was given with the Honda, if you take your JDM Honda in they are going to need to know exactly what version of the engine you have and if they don’t they need to know how to find out. Make sure to ask any and all needed questions before letting someone work on your vehicle.

Finding the parts can also be difficult but there are many dealerships that will work on JDM vehicles and they will help you find your needed parts. Be prepared to pay a little extra due to the fact that many of the parts may have to be ordered from overseas and some are hard to find. Do not be discouraged about buying a JDM vehicle because they are very prevalent in the United States. Simply be smart about taking care of your maintenance as well as whom you let perform it. Always ask questions first to ensure that you are dealing with a qualified person.
