So you are going on a lengthy road trip, perhaps you are going cross country to visit relatives, or just sightseeing? Did you know that it might be a better financial decision to rent a car rather than using your own?
How to determine which is the better strategy: Look at the facts 1. How many miles will your trip put on the vehicle? Mileage depreciates a vehicle, try and calculate the loss of value your car will face with these extra miles. If you are putting those miles onto a rental car, who cares! 2. What are the expected maintenance costs per mile for your trip? Most vehicles average about 5 or so cents per mile of use on top of fuel and fluid use. The beauty of a rental car is that you will not have to pay to repair it, even if you drive it into the ground. 3. Fuel economy. Would there be a noticeable difference in fuel costs between your beloved SUV vs. a rented Prius? 4. Is your personal vehicle large enough to comfortably handle all your gear and all your companions? Even if you have to rent a large van, it should still be cheaper on gas to run than using two vehicles or to tow a heavy trailer. 5. Will your car require upgrades or repairs before you leave? If yes remember rental cars should be fully functional and you do not have to pay for their maintenance. Rental cars should also come equipped with the appropriate tires, i.e. winter tires for a winter road trip. Obviously it will not always be cheaper to rent a car, but keep it in mind especially for those long trips. |
