There are several basic things that one should be prepared for when going out to purchase a new or used vehicle. There are lots of traps and pitfalls you can encounter and all buyers should be prepared for them before they head out to their local car dealer. Preparation and patience should be foremost on one's mind.

Do you research. (‘Research, research, research!')

The internet has made itself an invaluable tool as a quick source of information. It allows the customer to have prior knowledge as to the facts about a car, i.e. is reliability, features, safety, and price. Such knowledge is invaluable on the car lot as it will take the anxiety out of your dealing with the salesperson. Negotiations and price comparisons can be tricky but if you are armed with the necessary information they become quite straightforward. There are nearly unlimited resources available and it is recommended that you peruse more than one to gain comprehensive knowledge.

Stay calm and take your time

When it come to visiting dealers or even to strolling through online or printed listings, take your time. This is harder than it sounds as most people are under time pressure to obtain new wheels. Time is at a premium and let’s face it, spending your valuable time buying a car is not particularly desirable. Giving your self time helps protect you against making hurried, possibly bad decisions. It allows for breathing space in negotiations and often puts the pressure upon the salesperson to make some moves on price. It is simply not usually true that by refusing to act right away you will miss out on a once in a lifetime deal. Newer and better deals are always just around the corner.

Shop around.

Like most goods, cars are available through many different ways and at many different places. Do contact different dealers and compare pricing. Try and use dealer offers to get even better ones. One thing to keep in mind however is that there are legitimate reasons why some cars are priced differently than similar cars. Regional demand, better condition, different warranty coverage and only some reasons why your local dealer may be priced higher than an online or foreign competitor. Make sure you have all the facts when comparing prices.
